The Faculty of Science (University of Malta) in collaboration with the Department of Curriculum Management (MEDE) recently launched the Go4Research student internship programme.

A group of 21 students who recently participated in the Malta Junior Science Olympiad are offered an opportunity to work side by side with researchers conducting studies in seven different STEM fields namely Biology, Chemistry, Electromagnetics, Astronomy, Mathematics, Geosciences & Statistics.

The Faculty of Science Dean Prof. Charles Sammut and Director of Curriculum Management Mr Gaetano Bugeja welcomed the students and augured them success in their new internship endeavour.The students were also greeted by Rector Prof. Alfred Vella and Hon Minister Chris Agius.

During the summer months the students will work on different sampling techniques, operational observations, data management and analysis, investigations and scientific research projects.

MJSO students at Esplora

Esplora recently hosted the three winning student teams of the Malta Junior Science Olympiad.  The students were greeted by Dr Ivan Gatt (Esplora BoG President) and Ms Rachael Blackburn (Esplora Director).  The students then strolled around the 200 science exhibits displayed around the exhibition halls  and viewed the Planetarium show Back to the moon for good. The Malta Junior Science Olympiad students will also be offered a student internship opportunity organized by the Faculty of Science (University of Malta) in collaboration with the Department of Curriculum Management.

European Schoolnet launched a STEM Careers Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) entitled Opening Minds to STEM Careers.

The MOOC aims to train and empower teachers to introduce and attract young students to STEM career paths from an early age. The MOOC is a collaborative effort of three different projects namely SYSTEMIC, Scientix and STEM Alliance.

The course will run for 8 weeks starting Monday 3rd April 2017. The following themes will be explored during the course:

1. STEM Careers in schools and in the job market.

2. STEM Careers pathways.

3. Career induction activities, materials and guidelines.

4. Gender stereotypes in STEM education.

5. How to balance the roles of teachers, mentors and parents.

6. Benefits of external school-to-work programmes.

7. Career orientation events on STEM education.

Each participant will receive digital module badges for each completed course module and a course certificate on successful completion of the whole course.

The Faculty of Science, University of Malta and the Department of Curriculum Management within the Ministry for Education & Employment are launching the Go4Research Student Internship Programme for scholastic year 2016/17.  The initiative engages 21 students who participated in the Malta Junior Science Olympiad (MJSO) that was held in November 2016, in research work related to their preferred field of science study.

This initiative aims to provide the participating students an opportunity  to explore different STEM career fields and areas of research.  The programme also facilitates students’ transition into further and higher education & training in STEM subjects and prospective careers.  The internship programme also targets to create better partnership opportunities between local STEM researchers/lecturers and young science students.


The official launch of the Go4Research Student Internship Programme is scheduled for Wednesday 8th March at John Borg Hall Science Lecture Theatre, University of Malta.

The seminar aims to facilitate a more clear definition of ESD and perceive it as a cross-curricular theme that has to be integrated into the teaching and learning process in all areas. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss skills and competencies to be acquired by learners in such a learning process. The seminar will also discuss already existing programmes like Eathink WE EAT RESPOSIBLY, Dinja Wahda, Eco-Skola, Alter aqua, LEAF, among others, that can be used as tools to help them integrate ESD principles into their daily teaching and learning processes; while keeping in mind that their creativity can lead them to develop any other tool or methodology they might require for this purpose.

STEM comparative report

The information provided in this report is based on the national contributions received from the ScientixNational Contact Points representing 30 countries, in response to a survey on national measures and initiatives to increase students’ interest in pursuing STEM studies and careers, launched in the summer of 2015 byEuropean Schoolnet. This main source of data is complemented with information presented by a number of Ministries of Education during European Schoolnet’s annual conference, Eminent, on 18-19 November 2015, which was organised by the Scientix project.

The previous edition of the current report was published in 2011. This report is the latest edition, and has been written by European Schoolnet, with the support of the project Scientix. This latest report in the series updates the information published on certain issues in the 2011 edition, provides further information where available about ongoing initiatives, as well as new information concerning the additional nine countries who have contributed to this year’s report (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, Poland, and the United Kingdom).

Moreover, this 2015 edition of the report has a special focus on teacher education policies and initiatives. This focus is the result of the previous edition of the report (covering a wide range of issues in relation to STEM education), which identified improving initial teacher education and continuous professional development at the heart of the drive to make STEM studies and professions a more popular option for young learners. This current edition looks more deeply into how countries are developing initiatives in these areas.
